New Year's Eve 2009

We started the day with fired dough covered in sugar! Check out the amazing home-made doughnuts at Doughnut Plant in Lower East Side.

They even had a special doughnut for 2009 shaped like a "9."

We then drove uptown through the West Village in snow and cold wind. We were warm and cozy in our little Honda!

To get to our next stop, we had to cross Amtrak rails in Washington Heights.

We were looking for a little Red Light House under the George Washington Bridge. I think this is the only lighthouse on Manhattan island.

It was freezing, specially by the river, but we had to take some pictures.

After a quick stop at the Cloisters in the Fort Tryon Park.

It was time to eat. We found parking behind a funny car in the West Village.

We ate at the Hummus Place...YUMMY and cheap!

Driving back to Brooklyn over the Manhattan Bridge.

I took a few quick pictures while driving as Mallory steered and watched the road.

The night is not over, but I am tired. We will make a stop at home and rest for a while.

The next stop was at Elizabeth and Ash (no last name, your welcome). We had yummy food and played Trivial Pursuit.

The highlight of the night was Pratt Institute in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. At midnight people gather to hear the university's tradition known as the New Year’s Eve steam whistles.

A few hundred people gathered in Pratt campus the listen to the steam whistles and to usher in 2009 in sub-freezing temperatures.

That is all she wrote for 2009.

Former Secretary of State, Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama over the weekend. Powell talked about a 20 year old Muslim American from New Jersey who died in Iraq while making his case against the Republican's strategy and the rumors about Obama's faith. So I was down in Wall Street for the usual coverage of the current state of economic crisis yesterday. I noticed a crowd around a photographer. It happened to be a shooter whose blog I review on daily basis. I also dig his pictures. Click on the photo to see his blog.

Say it ain't so Joe!? Evidently Mr. Joe the plumber is not really an average Joe, nor a licensed plumber. There is also the issue of unpaid taxes.

Basically Mr. McCain ruined Joe's.... I mean Sam's life by trying to use him to make a point with false presumptions.

As it was clear "Joe the plumber" became a media subject the day after the presidential debate. As a result his whole life went under media scrutiny. Read The New York Times story here.

But really, how many plumbers make over $250,000? In Ohio! Is this middle of America? Is plumbing that good in Toledo? Is he just an average plumber? Good for Mr. Wurzelbacher to make over $250,000, but he is no average Joe!

The reporter is pushed into the traffic by a cop and then chocked by a supervisor officer who is smoking a cigar while arresting him. The supervisor then says "you are under arrest buster." Is this China? Or Denver, USA? Just not right.

Over the weekend, Mallory and I saw a great movie. No it was not The Dark Knight, or the X-Files, or the Mummy .....can Hollywood think of ANYTHING creative or new these days?
We saw 'Man on Wire' (preview).

The movie is about the true and delightful story of Philippe Petit. Petit, crossed the Twin Towers on a tightrope, 110 floors about the earth, as the buildings were near completion in mid 70's.

Please go and see this movie. You will "love" it.

Here are a couple of pics from China. 13 plus hour flight was fine, the food is ok, the air is heavy and polluted, the sky is grey. We have not seen the sun yet. Beijing is big and not attractive.

Today Dith Pran, a New York Times photographer, died of pancreatic cancer in a hospital in NJ. If you had never heard of Dith Pran, perhaps you have seen the movie The Killing Fields which tells the true story of Dith escaping the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. His story made a big impression on me. I had met him during assignments around NY. He was a gentle and sweet man with a nice smile.

DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It is an industrial area which has turned into the newest hot-spot in NYC with galleries, shops, and expensive apartments.
